Physiology Practicum: Measuring Respiratory Rate

On Wednesday, 27 November 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) held a Physiology Skills Lab focusing on respiratory rate measurement. This activity aimed to enhance clinical skills among dental students and was conducted at the Integrated Laboratory, DLC Building, 4th Floor. The initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, ensuring access to high-quality education.

Through this practicum, students learned a critical clinical skill—measuring respiratory rate—which is fundamental to their future medical careers. Understanding respiration is crucial, as it involves the mechanical process of supplying oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide, a byproduct of cellular metabolism. This knowledge is essential for all healthcare providers, as it directly relates to patient assessment and treatment.

The respiratory rate measurement method involves observing the rise and fall of the chest and counting the number of breaths taken per minute. While simple, this technique is a vital skill that students must master to prepare for their clinical practice. By practicing this skill early in their education, students will be better equipped to handle clinical challenges in their professional careers.

Additionally, this skills lab fosters collaboration and teamwork among students. Working in pairs or small groups enables them to share insights, refine techniques, and learn from one another. This collaborative environment creates a supportive atmosphere, which is essential in the healthcare field.

The Physiology Skills Lab reflects the institution’s commitment to enhancing educational access and preparing students for their future roles in healthcare. By training students in respiratory rate measurement, they gain the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to deliver high-quality patient care.
