Saliva Analysis Practicum

Third-semester students of the Dental Medicine Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully completed the Saliva Analysis Practicum on Tuesday, 20 August 2024, at the Phantom DLC Laboratory, 2nd floor. This activity aimed to enhance students' understanding and skills in analyzing salivary flow rate, a crucial factor in preventing dental caries.

Saliva plays a vital role as the first line of defense against caries, helping dilute and wash away acids produced in oral biofilm. It also contributes to acid buffering and supports tooth remineralization. Disruptions in salivary flow rate often increase the risk of caries, making saliva analysis essential in dental practice.

This practicum provided students with hands-on experience in saliva test techniques, a procedure used to evaluate the salivary flow rate in patients. This initiative is part of the Faculty of Dentistry UGM’s preventive strategy and aligns with the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).
