Residents of the Conservative Dentistry Study Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), participated in the Skill Labs CAD/CAM Technology in Modern Dentistry on Friday, 8 November 2024, at the Dental Learning Center, 1st Floor. The training session was led by drg. Pribadi Santoso, M.S., Sp.KG.(K), aiming to introduce and train residents in utilizing Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology for more precise and efficient dental restorations.
During the training, drg. Pribadi explained fundamental aspects of CAD/CAM technology, including the principles of design software, digital scanning processes using an intraoral scanner, and techniques for producing ceramic or composite restorations. With this technology, restorations such as crowns, inlays, onlays, and veneers can be designed with high accuracy and processed much faster than conventional methods. Throughout the session, residents learned to perform digital scans to capture patients' dental morphology, which was then processed through CAD software to create restorations tailored to clinical needs. Once the design was finalized, the restoration was immediately fabricated using CAM-based milling machines.
Additionally, drg. Pribadi provided valuable tips and techniques to ensure restorations achieve good marginal adaptation, optimal aesthetics, and strong mechanical properties. Residents also had the opportunity to operate CAD/CAM devices, from using scanners to engaging in the design and milling process. This activity is expected to prepare residents for the digital transformation in dentistry, enabling them to provide faster, more precise, and higher-quality restorative treatments for patients.
The event supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by improving the precision and efficiency of dental restorations, and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by equipping residents with practical skills in utilizing CAD/CAM technology for their clinical practice.
