On Friday to Saturday, 8-9 November 2024, the Workshop on Flipped Classroom and MOOC Integration for Active Learning in Undergraduate Dentistry Education took place at Grand Mercure, Solo Baru. The workshop was attended by several representatives from the Department of Conservative Dentistry, including Dr. drg. Tunjung Nugraheni, M.Kes., Sp.KG.(K), Dr. drg. R. Tri Endra Untara, M.Kes., Sp.KG.(K), drg. Henytaria Fajrianti, Sp.KG, drg. Rahmadani Puspitasari, MDSc., drg. Fajar Satrio, drg. Iffah Mardhiyah, M.Biomed.
The goal of the workshop was to explore the integration of the Flipped Classroom method and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as effective active learning models to enhance the quality of dental education. Participants gained in-depth insights into the concepts and applications of both methods and how they can complement each other to provide students with a more interactive and flexible learning experience.
Irwan Endrayanto, Director of Academic Studies and Innovation at UGM, introduced the flipped learning approach, which prioritizes learning activities outside the classroom. This revolutionary method shifts away from traditional learning by encouraging students to study course materials at home through videos and online resources, while in-class sessions focus on discussions, problem-solving, and collaborative activities with lecturers. By integrating blended learning with digital technology, flipped learning ensures alignment between learning objectives, activities, and assessments. To effectively implement this method, lecturers must carefully design learning materials that enable students to prepare optimally before face-to-face sessions. Key strategic steps include identifying challenging topics, designing online activities and in-class discussions, explaining the connection between in-class and out-of-class activities, providing supporting materials such as videos and simulations. Additionally, collaborative assignments, gamification elements, and formative assessments (such as quizzes, pre-tests, and post-tests) are incorporated to monitor students' progress. This student-centered approach is expected to create an engaging learning environment, increase active participation, and support modern education practices that are relevant both locally and globally.
This workshop contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education, as it advances the quality of higher education and promotes adaptive teaching methods that align with technological advancements and student needs.
