Teledentistry: Remote Dental Health Consultation

Advancements in technology have made many aspects of life more convenient, including healthcare services. Today, consultations with doctors can be conducted remotely without the need for in-person visits. This innovation is realized through Teledentistry, one of the flagship programs of National Dental Health Month (BKGN) UGM 2024.

The Teledentistry program during BKGN UGM 2024 received high enthusiasm from the public. Over the three-day event, a total of 117 patients utilized the online dental consultation service held on 17, 18, and 19 December 2024. This initiative aims to make dental healthcare more accessible, in line with this year’s theme: “Confident to Show Your Smile, Supporting a Stronger Indonesia.”

drg. Muhammad Fahmi Alfian, M.P.H., Coordinator of Teledentistry BKGN UGM 2024, explained that the online consultation service was designed to reach individuals who may face challenges in accessing direct healthcare facilities. “Teledentistry leverages cutting-edge technology to help people receive dental consultations anytime, anywhere. We hope this service becomes the first step in encouraging people to be more aware of the importance of maintaining oral health,” said Fahmi.

Launched in 2022, Teledentistry services have seen significant improvements, particularly with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based enhancements. AI-powered features now allow users to receive more personalized recommendations, more accurate dental health analyses, and faster responses. With these innovations, the public is expected to routinely consult dentists, both virtually and in person.

The most common dental concerns addressed in online consultations included cavities, swollen gums, and orthodontic (braces) treatments. Data showed that the number of patients gradually increased throughout the event, with 11 patients on the first day, 26 on the second day, and a significant rise to 80 on the third day.

BKGN UGM 2024 was successfully organized through a collaboration between FKG UGM, RSGM Prof. Soedomo, and PT Unilever Pepsodent, offering a variety of programs to support public dental health. Teledentistry emerged as one of the key innovations, expected to broaden access to dental healthcare services in Indonesia.

With these positive outcomes, FKG UGM is committed to further enhancing its Teledentistry services in the future. “We aim to establish Teledentistry as a sustainable solution for the community, ensuring that anyone with dental health concerns can promptly consult with a dentist,” Fahmi added.
