Saturday (30/11/2024) – The second day of the ethicolegal workshop at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) continued to provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals. Under the theme "Ethics and Code of Conduct as the Pillars of Healthcare Professionalism," the event featured Dr. Diah Arimbi, S.Si.T., M.H. as the keynote speaker, moderated by drg. Achmad Zamzam Aghasy.
Dr. Diah opened the session by emphasizing the essential role of ethical codes as moral and professional guidelines that set the standard for healthcare professionals’ conduct. "Ethics is not just about distinguishing right from wrong but about how these values are applied in everyday practice," she stated.
The discussion focused on fundamental principles of professional ethics, including autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Dr. Diah highlighted the importance of respecting patients' rights, from maintaining data confidentiality to ensuring freedom of choice in treatment decisions.
"A patient’s rights are fundamental and must not be compromised," she added.
Dr. Diah also emphasized the role of integrity and professionalism in maintaining public trust in healthcare institutions. She pointed out that ethical codes must evolve continuously to stay relevant to societal needs and advancements.
"A dynamic code of ethics allows healthcare professionals to remain adaptive while upholding their professional identity," she explained.
The workshop also engaged participants in analyzing real-life cases of ethical and legal violations in medical practice. During the discussion, Dr. Diah stressed the interconnectedness of ethical and legal breaches, noting that while not all ethical violations are legal offenses, they often overlap.
"Upholding ethical professionalism not only protects against legal risks but also fosters strong trust-based relationships with the community," she concluded.
This event reaffirmed FKG UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by enhancing ethical standards in healthcare services; and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by promoting accountability and integrity in medical institutions.
Through initiatives like this, iDSDC FKG UGM continues to strengthen healthcare professionals' understanding of ethicolegal principles. This effort aims to contribute to a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system, capable of addressing global challenges in the future.
