The orthodontic residents of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), participated in the Orthodontic Specialist Competency Examination organized by the Indonesian Orthodontic Specialist College. This competency examination took place at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga (FKG UNAIR) on Sunday, 14 January 2024, and included orthodontic residents from various leading educational institutions in Indonesia, such as Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Airlangga, and Universitas Hasanuddin.
The Orthodontic Specialist Competency Examination is a significant milestone in the professional journey of prospective orthodontic specialists. This examination is designed to comprehensively assess the participants’ competencies, including theoretical understanding, clinical skills, and essential interpersonal communication abilities in orthodontic practice. Through this examination, the Indonesian Orthodontic Specialist College is committed to maintaining quality standards and competencies for orthodontic specialists in Indonesia.
The Orthodontic Specialist Competency Examination consists of three complementary main components:
- Computer Based Test (CBT): A computer-based evaluation that tests participants' in-depth theoretical knowledge in the field of orthodontics.
- Wire Bending Skills Examination: A practical assessment focused on participants' abilities to manipulate orthodontic wire precisely and accurately, a crucial skill in orthodontic treatment.
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): comprehensive practical exam that evaluates participants' abilities to perform relevant orthodontic clinical procedures, as well as their effectiveness in communicating with patients.
The examination team involved in the Orthodontic Specialist Competency Examination consists of experts in the field of orthodontics from various leading universities in Indonesia, including Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and Universitas Padjadjaran. The involvement of these experts ensures the objectivity and credibility of the assessment process.
The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Airlangga (FKG UNAIR), as the host and local committee, has prepared all technical and logistical aspects to ensure the smooth execution of the examination. The full support from the college and the commitment of the local committee are expected to produce high-quality orthodontic specialists who are ready to contribute positively to society.
