A total of 142 sixth-semester dental students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) participated in the Oral Surgery Management 2 practicum, which took place on Thursday and Friday, 6-7 June 2024, at the Preclinical Laboratory of the OECF Building. The practicum focused on techniques for Dentoalveolar Fracture Fixation using the Ivy, Stout’s, and Essig methods.
This practicum is an essential part of the learning process to ensure that students can perform fixation, which involves the immobilization of dentoalveolar fracture fragments and luxated teeth that have been repositioned.
This process is crucial for supporting the healing of fractured bones and restoring tooth strength, with fixation achieved using wires or a combination of composite materials and wire/fiber, provided that the occlusion returns to its normal position.
Dentoalveolar trauma, often resulting from traffic accidents, involves damage to the hard tissues of the tooth pulp, as well as the supporting tissues such as periodontal tissue, alveolar bone, and soft tissues.
Thus, the practicum provides students with an understanding of the importance of fixation procedures in the management of dentoalveolar fractures and trains them in selecting the appropriate tools and materials for various fixation methods.
