Workshop on OBE-Based Question Development at FKG UGM Enhances Dental Education Quality

In a bid to enhance the quality of education in the Undergraduate Dentistry Program, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) hosted a workshop focused on developing evaluation questions aligned with the principles of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). Held at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium on 15–16 October 2024, the event brought together key participants, including course/topic coordinators, topic managers, teaching staff, and the curriculum team of the Undergraduate Dentistry Program.

Outcome-Based Education emphasizes achieving specific outcomes or competencies expected of students. In this approach, learning processes, assessments, and curricula are designed to achieve these desired results. A key element of OBE is crafting evaluation questions that accurately measure learning outcomes, making it a critical component in implementing this results-focused educational system.

The workshop commenced with a speech by the Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D. He highlighted FKG UGM’s significant contributions to advancing dental education and services in Indonesia. He noted that many FKG UGM lecturers hold strategic positions in national organizations, showcasing the faculty's leadership in dentistry education. Key figures from FKG UGM include: Prof. drg. Tetiana Haniastuti, M.Kes., Ph.D., Chair of the Indonesian Dentistry Collegium, focusing on enhancing dental competencies. Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D., also serving as the head of the Indonesian Association of Dental Faculties (AFDOKGI) to promote dental education quality. Dr. drg. Julita Hendrartini, M.Kes., Chair of the Indonesian Dental and Oral Hospital Association (RSGM). Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D., a validator for the Ministry of Education and Culture. drg. Fimma Naritasari, MDSc, part of the AFDOKGI Education Study Team. These roles underscore FKG UGM's commitment to improving education and health services nationally and internationally.

The workshop aimed to significantly enhance the quality of education at FKG UGM, especially in crafting evaluation questions aligned with OBE standards. Lecturers were trained to develop effective questions that evaluate desired learning outcomes accurately, reinforcing the broader commitment to sustainable education and preparing future dental professionals with essential competencies.

Dr. Yoyo Suhayo, M.Med.Ed., Ph.D., a medical education expert from UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, was one of the speakers. Specializing in OBE-based question and evaluation development, Dr. Yoyo provided valuable insights. “Writing questions is not difficult; it just requires the right amount of time to produce quality questions,” he remarked during his session.

The workshop included interactive sessions where participants collaborated and shared best practices in question development. This collaborative environment encouraged deeper understanding and alignment of assessments with learning outcomes. Participants left with strategies to create high-quality evaluation questions effectively.

Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, the workshop emphasized the importance of sustainable education. By equipping educators with skills for effective assessments, FKG UGM is proactively ensuring competent graduates capable of addressing challenges in the dental field.
