Gum disease (gingiva) or periodontitis is a common oral health issue that requires special attention. In the search for safer and more natural solutions, researchers worldwide, including those in Indonesia, have begun exploring the potential of natural substances.
One that is gaining attention is propolis, a natural product from honeybees with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D., from the Department of Periodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), has conducted extensive research on the effectiveness of propolis in reducing gum inflammation, particularly in cases of gingivitis and periodontitis.
"Propolis contains flavonoids that are effective against bacteria causing periodontal disease," said Prof. Suryono in his research. He added that this study opens opportunities for the development of more natural and environmentally friendly therapies.
The research, funded by the Kedaireka Matching Fund 2023, has shown that the use of propolis significantly inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and reduces symptoms such as gum swelling and bleeding.
"With its antimicrobial properties, propolis can accelerate the healing process of gums," Prof. Suryono stated in an interview.
Furthermore, the research has not only remained in academic studies but has also been implemented in oral health products.
Together with his team, Prof. Suryono launched “Prospasdent” toothpaste and “Propagel” propolis gel, designed to help alleviate gum inflammation and promote overall periodontal health.
The success of this research aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 9 (Innovation and Infrastructure), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
This discovery is expected to have a positive impact on public health while also supporting research that promotes natural and sustainable therapies.
This study brings new hope to individuals seeking alternative, safe oral healthcare treatments.
Using propolis as a base ingredient in the treatment of periodontitis not only offers a more holistic solution but also supports the development of more environmentally friendly and innovative therapies for the future.
"In the future, we hope that propolis can become a primary alternative in more natural gum disease treatments," concluded Prof. Suryono.
