The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BMM) Study Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), officially welcomed 12 new residents for the 2024 cohort during the Resident Inauguration Ceremony held on Thursday, 10 October 2024, at the UGM Prof. Soedomo Dental Teaching Hospital (RSGM UGM).
This event is an annual tradition that not only welcomes new residents but also assigns them a special initial designation, which will serve as their permanent identity until they graduate as specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
“These initials are very sacred because these two letters will remain with the residents forever, even after they graduate and begin their careers as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialists,” explained drg. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp.C.O.M.(K), Head of the BMM Study Program.
Simultaneously, the Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D., attended the ceremony and expressed his appreciation for the increased intake quota for the BMM program, now set at 12 students. “We hope that the number of graduates from the BMM program will continue to rise, along with this increase in student intake,” he remarked.
In addition, the Deputy Director of RSGM UGM Prof. Soedomo, Dr. drg. Andi Triawan, Sp.Ort(K), also delivered a warm welcome to the new residents, emphasizing that RSGM UGM, as the main Teaching Hospital, is fully prepared to support their educational process. “We warmly welcome you to RSGM as the place where you will carry out your clinical education,” he stated.
Following that, the Head of the BMM Department, drg. Poerwati Soetji Rahajoe, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp.T.M.T.M.J.(K), shared motivational messages with the new residents. “Enjoy every step of this educational journey. It’s not easy, but it’s not difficult either. Everything will be achievable, so embrace this long journey,” she encouraged in her speech.
The ceremony concluded with the symbolic assignment of initials to the new residents, followed by the handing over of the uniforms they will wear during their duties. Additionally, the new residents performed and sang the Lagu Residen (Resident Song) composed by drg. Agus Mulato, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp.T.M.T.M.J.(K), in front of the guests. The event ended with a friendly gathering and a warm welcome from the entire academic community of the BMM Program.
This Resident Inauguration ceremony not only marks the beginning of the educational journey for the new residents but also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the enhancement of healthcare professionals' quality, and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by ensuring a sustainable and high-quality education system.
