Orthodontists on Social Media: Balancing Ethics and the Urgency of Education

In the digital era, social media has become an important platform for professionals, including orthodontists, to share information and educate the public. However, using social media also raises ethical challenges that must be addressed. To explore this issue, the Orthodontics Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM) held a webinar titled “Professionalism Ethics in Digitalization of Educational Content for Orthodontists” on Saturday, 10 August 2024.

The webinar, hosted via Zoom, was attended by orthodontic residents and specialists. The keynote speaker was drg. Rifqie Al Haris, a Content Creator, Education Manager, and CEO of @KorbanTukangGigi, who shared his insights on “Orthodontists on Social Media: Ethics vs the Urgency of Education.”

In his presentation, drg. Rifqie Al Haris emphasized the importance of maintaining professional ethics while using social media. While social media can be an effective tool for educating the public, orthodontists must be cautious not to violate the ethical code of dental practice when sharing information.

This webinar is part of the Orthodontics Community Service Program at FKG UGM. Through this initiative, the Orthodontics Program at FKG UGM aims to assist orthodontic specialists in making optimal use of social media while adhering to professional ethics.

It is hoped that with a better understanding of the ethics of social media use, orthodontists can contribute positively to public education while preserving the integrity of their profession.
