Bleeding gums are a common issue that is often overlooked, even though this condition can be an early sign of serious dental and oral health problems. One of the primary causes of bleeding gums is poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque buildup along the gumline. Plaque contains bacteria that can cause gum inflammation, or gingivitis, which makes the gums red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. If left untreated, this condition can progress to periodontal disease, which risks further damage to the gum tissue and the bones supporting the teeth.
In addition to poor oral hygiene, other factors such as hormonal changes, deficiencies in vitamins C and K, and the use of certain medications that reduce blood clotting ability can also contribute to bleeding gums. Smoking, stress, and an unhealthy lifestyle can further worsen gum health, making them more susceptible to inflammation and infection. It is important to identify these causes to determine the right solutions based on each individual’s health condition.
To address bleeding gums, the first step is to improve oral hygiene. Brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste, using dental floss to clean between teeth, and rinsing with antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce the bacteria that cause inflammation. Additionally, it is important to ensure sufficient intake of vitamins, especially vitamin C, which helps strengthen gum tissue, and vitamin K, which plays a role in the blood clotting process.
Dr. Ahmad Syaify from UGM noted an increase in gingivitis cases and highlighted the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and scheduling regular dental check-ups to prevent inflammation. He explained that plaque buildup and improper brushing techniques can trigger gum inflammation.
If bleeding gums persist, it is advisable to consult a dentist for more appropriate treatment. A dentist can perform thorough plaque and tartar cleaning and provide personalized care recommendations. With consistent care and a healthier lifestyle, bleeding gum issues can be resolved, ensuring overall oral health is well maintained.
Promoting the importance of oral health is essential for overall well-being, encouraging gum disease prevention through good dental care. Quality education on gum health care raises public awareness, helping individuals understand the causes and effective ways to manage bleeding gums. Providing accessible information to all communities helps reduce inequalities in health information access, including gum health.
