Behind the bustling Beringharjo Market, there is an untold story of buruh gendong—porters who tirelessly carry heavy loads from dawn until dusk to support their families. Despite their hard work, access to healthcare remains a challenge for many of them.
As part of the 2024 National Dental Health Month (BKGN), the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) invited buruh gendong under the guidance of BMT Beringharjo to receive free dental check-ups and treatment on 17 December 2024. This initiative was a collaborative effort between FKG UGM, Prof. Soedomo Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM), and PT Unilever Indonesia, demonstrating a shared commitment to improving oral health for underserved communities.
drg. Silvianna Farrah Diba, Sp.RKG(K), Chair of BKGN UGM 2024, expressed her appreciation for this year's program. She highlighted that the participation of buruh gendong from BMT Beringharjo reflects the program’s success in reaching those who truly need dental care. "We hope this initiative continues and benefits even more people in the future," Farrah stated.
A total of ten buruh gendong received free dental care, including tooth extractions and fillings. One of the beneficiaries, Ibu Suyatmi, shared her gratitude: "I’m so happy to receive free dental treatment. Plus, we were provided transportation, so it was very convenient for us," she said with a relieved smile.
BMT Beringharjo has been a long-term partner of FKG UGM, collaborating on various community service programs, including previous free dental check-ups for buruh gendong. Initiatives like these expand access to dental healthcare, particularly for communities facing healthcare barriers.
The buruh gendong under BMT Beringharjo are typically between 40 and 60 years old, with approximately 200 members. Their daily routine at Beringharjo Market involves physically demanding tasks, such as carrying goods for vendors and buyers. Despite the exhausting nature of their work, they continue to persevere to support their families.
This initiative reinforces FKG UGM’s commitment to public health and serves as an inspiration to prioritize vulnerable groups who often face limited access to healthcare. The organizing committee hopes that this collaboration will continue and serve as a model for other institutions in fulfilling their social responsibilities.
