How to Overcome Persistent Mouth Ulcers

Persistent mouth ulcers can interfere with daily activities, especially when eating or speaking. While most mouth ulcers typically heal within 1–2 weeks, certain conditions may cause them to last longer. It is therefore important to understand the causes and proper treatments to support faster and more effective recovery.

Understanding the Causes of Slow-Healing Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers that last more than two weeks may be caused by various factors. Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid, can delay the healing of wounds inside the mouth. Additionally, certain health conditions such as autoimmune disorders, fungal infections, or side effects of certain medications may also prolong ulcer duration. Stress and the habit of consuming excessive spicy or acidic foods can further aggravate the condition.

Steps to Treat Persistent Mouth Ulcers

If a mouth ulcer doesn’t heal on its own, several steps can be taken to speed up the healing process. First, maintaining oral hygiene by regularly brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash can help prevent further infection. Topical gels or ointments containing antiseptics and pain relievers can also help reduce pain and promote healing.

In addition, consuming foods rich in vitamins and minerals—particularly vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid—can help repair damaged tissues. Avoiding irritating foods, such as spicy, acidic, or hard foods, is also highly recommended. If stress is a contributing factor, managing stress through exercise or relaxation techniques can be an effective solution.

When to See a Doctor

You should consult a dentist or medical professional if a mouth ulcer does not heal after more than three weeks, becomes larger, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever and severe pain. Long-lasting mouth ulcers may indicate a more serious health issue, such as an infection or an immune system disorder. A study conducted by drg. Ayu Fresno Argadianti, Sp.PM, revealed that certain traditional remedies may worsen ulcer conditions due to chemical irritation. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when choosing treatments and consult a dentist before using traditional medicine.

Proper and prompt treatment of mouth ulcers can prevent more serious complications. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and good oral hygiene is key to preventing and managing stubborn ulcers. These practices not only support individual well-being but also align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. Additionally, by choosing the right oral care products and avoiding untested traditional remedies, we contribute to Goal 12: ensuring responsible consumption and production patterns.
