Oral cancer is a deadly disease in Indonesia. According to Riskesdas data, the prevalence of tumors\/cancer in Indonesia has increased from 1.4 per 1000 population in 2013 to 1.79 per 1000 population in 2018. In response to this data, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), in collaboration with the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI), organized a seminar and oral health screening on 11 May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event, held at the YKI Coordinating Branch in DIY, aimed to raise public awareness about the importance of cancer screening and prevention, particularly oral cancer, and to provide health check-ups for the general public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The highest incidence of cancer in Indonesia is found in Yogyakarta, with 4.86 per 1000 population. The high incidence and prevalence underscore the importance of early detection and regular screening to reduce cancer mortality and morbidity rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. drg. Alma Linggar Jonarta, M.Kes., a lecturer at FKG UGM and a speaker at the event, emphasized the need for vigilance. \"Oral cancer can be prevented earlier by identifying clinical signs called precancerous lesions, which have the potential to become cancerous,\" said Dr. Alma. She added that early detection of oral cancer allows for quicker intervention and can prevent severe outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The screening process was conducted by dentists from FKG UGM, assisted by co-ass and pre-clinical students. During the screening, dentists examined the inside of the mouth for red or white patches and ulcers. The throat and neck were also checked for lumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tuti Indarsih, a manager at the Indonesian Cancer Foundation Yogyakarta, expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the FKG UGM team\u2019s presence and educational efforts. She stated, \"YKI Yogyakarta, along with other stakeholders, is committed to detecting and combating cancer in Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through this activity, participants are expected better to understand the importance of oral cancer screening and prevention. The screening results will be followed up with ongoing educational activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 3, \"Good Health and Well-being,\" by providing health services that improve the quality of life and reduce the cancer burden in Indonesia.
