This was one of the key messages delivered by drg. Poerwati Soetji Rahajoe, Sp.BMM(K), Subsp.T.M.T.M.J(K), Ph.D., affectionately known as drg. Sutji, during the FKG UGM Dental Implant Class (23 June 2026), where she presented a lecture on local anesthesia in dental practice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to drg. Sutji, concerns among dental practitioners regarding the possibility of local anesthetics causing nerve injury are not strongly supported by scientific evidence. Based on her review of numerous scientific journals, most reported cases of nerve injury are associated with improper clinical procedures rather than the anesthetic itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Almost all studies have found no evidence of that. In other words, when <em>nerve injury<\/em> occurs during dental implant placement, it is almost always caused by improper procedures rather than the anesthetic,\" she explained during her presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that factors such as inaccurate measurements, improper<em>drilling techniques<\/em>, and incorrect implant placement have a much greater impact on the risk of complications than the effects of the anesthetic itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" data-id=\"19186\" src=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/06\/SUCI-BM-2.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond technical considerations, drg. Sutji also emphasized the importance of reviewing patients' allergy histories before administering local anesthesia. She reminded participants that substances such as sodium metabisulfite, which is present in certain anesthetic formulations, may trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Therefore, a thorough medical history should always be obtained before treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing different anesthetic agents, she highlighted articaine as one of the preferred options because of its superior ability to penetrate bone tissue compared with several other local anesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Articaine<\/em> has high lipophilicity, allowing it to penetrate cortical bone more effectively than other anesthetic agents,\" she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lecture underscored that the success of dental implant treatment depends not only on the quality of implant materials or anesthetic agents but, more importantly, on the clinician's ability to control inflammation, establish an accurate diagnosis, and apply appropriate anesthetic techniques.
