In her opening remarks, Prof. drg. Rosa Amalia, M.Kes., Ph.D., Vice Dean of FKG UGM,.<\/strong>emphasised that implantology is a rapidly evolving field with significant prospects for the future of dental healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \"Dental implants offer the advantage of providing more personalised rehabilitation for patients. Through this training, participants will learn every stage of implant treatment, from planning and case diagnosis to the necessary clinical procedures,\" she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Prof. Rosa, competency in implant placement cannot be acquired instantly. It requires continuous education that integrates theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and a thorough understanding of professional ethics and legal responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \"We have invited instructors who possess extensive experience and recognised expertise in their respective fields. Not every faculty member can serve as an instructor in this programme because the selection standards are quite rigorous,\" she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Comprehensive Curriculum: From Legal Aspects to Osseointegration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n An examination of the training curriculum demonstrates FKG UGM's commitment to developing participants' competencies in a gradual and systematic manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the first day, participants received fundamental instruction on the medicolegal aspects of dental implant placement, including indications and contraindications, as well as the professional boundaries that dentists must observe in accordance with regulations and ethical standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sessions were delivered by Prof. drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., and Prof. Dr. drg. Ahmad Syaify, Sp.Perio., Subsp.RPID(K).<\/p>\n\n\n\n This component of the programme is particularly important given the growing number of legal claims in healthcare services. Errors in diagnosis, inappropriate case selection, or procedures performed beyond a dentist's professional competence may lead to serious legal consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After establishing this legal and ethical foundation, participants continued with the fundamentals of implantology, including implant terminology, evaluation of hard and soft tissues, the concept of osseointegration, bone physiology, and the application of dental radiology to support successful treatment outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The curriculum demonstrates that successful implant placement depends not only on surgical expertise but also on a thorough understanding of biological principles and diagnostic processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Multidisciplinary Approach as the Key to Success<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the programme's greatest strengths is the multidisciplinary approach adopted by FKG UGM. Participants learned from multiple departments that play essential roles in successful implant therapy. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery covered anatomical considerations and surgical techniques, the Department of Periodontology focused on the health of implant-supporting tissues, while the Department of Prosthodontics provided instruction on restoring oral function and aesthetics following implant placement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the second day, participants explored various biological factors influencing treatment success, including differences in bone density between the maxilla and mandible, implant material selection, and prosthetic considerations tailored to each patient's clinical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This integrated approach reflects the evolution of modern implantology into a complex discipline that requires collaboration across multiple areas of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Learning Through Real Clinical Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The programme extended beyond classroom instruction by incorporating live surgical demonstrations(live surgery\/live procedures)<\/em> , enabling participants to observe the practical application of theoretical knowledge in real clinical cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This teaching approach offers valuable learning experiences that are difficult to obtain through formal education or scientific seminars alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Participants were able to observe clinical decision-making, surgical techniques, soft tissue management, and strategies for anticipating and managing complications throughout the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Such an approach effectively bridges the gap between academic theory and everyday clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Addressing the Needs of Indonesian Dentists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The implementation of this training programme also reflects the growing public demand for high-quality oral rehabilitation services. As patients become increasingly aware of both functional and aesthetic outcomes, demand for implant treatment continues to rise across Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, this increasing demand must be matched by improvements in dentists' competencies to ensure that implant services remain safe, effective, and consistent with professional standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FKG UGM views continuing professional education as a strategic instrument for ensuring that advances in dental technology are adopted responsibly by practising dentists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \"Please make the most of this learning opportunity.
