Over five days (February 17\u201321, 2026), four prospective lecturers and four laboratory staff from UNP participated in workshops, lab observations, and curriculum discussions. The program was part of preparatory mentoring for opening the UNP Dentistry Program under FKG UGM\u2019s supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For drg. Dira, the most striking aspect was not the advanced technology, but the continuously evolving academic culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe most fundamental lesson is this: never feel satisfied. Even an institution as large as UGM still benchmarks and keeps learning. That\u2019s the biggest takeaway for us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Key observations included digital learning systems, well-structured SOPs, and detailed practicum scheduling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe realized that behind a single schedule lies a structured and tested system. This isn\u2019t just about teaching\u2014it\u2019s about building an educational ecosystem,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology and Clinical Ethics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n In the skills lab, the group explored modern dental units equipped with phantom anesthesia systems that provide feedback when procedures are performed correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For drg. Dira, this prompted reflection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn the past, we practiced anesthesia directly on peers. Now, technology allows students to train safely without risk. This is not just about tools\u2014it\u2019s about safety and educational ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She emphasized that new programs should not aim merely to meet minimum standards but should strive to exceed them, given future accreditation demands and public expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Vision for Oral Surgery in Bukittinggi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Amid academic discussions, drg. Dira shared her personal aspiration to specialize in oral surgery. Bukittinggi currently lacks a resident oral surgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI hope that after completing my specialization, I can return and serve. Patients shouldn\u2019t always have to travel to other cities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She also envisions establishing a cleft center<\/em> in West Sumatra\u2014a comprehensive service center for cleft lip and palate cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Biology to Dentistry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Annisa Indah Rahman, S.Si., a laboratory staff member with a background in Biology, also experienced a significant learning transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSeeing cadavers for the first time was a new experience. Working with resin, alginate, and gypsum was entirely new to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the challenges, she viewed it as an opportunity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe five days felt short. There was so much new information, but it\u2019s essential preparation for next week\u2019s accreditation visit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She noted that the biggest challenge was not equipment, but developing clinical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf students don\u2019t understand, we must understand first.
