Some are born with clefts in their lips or palates. But in a regional hospital in East Lombok earlier this February, a group of children gradually rediscovered something simple yet fundamental\u2014a blooming smile.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">For several days, the operating room at RSUD dr. R. Soedjono in Selong, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, witnessed the meeting of limitations and hope. Sixteen patients\u2014mostly infants and toddlers\u2014underwent free cleft lip and palate surgeries from February 5\u20138, 2026.\nThe initiative was a collaboration between RSUD dr. R. Soedjono, Smile Train, Yayasan Senyum Harapan Nusantara, and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM). The team included faculty members, residents, and alumni working together in a community service mission to restore smiles to 16 patients in Selong.\nFor families, the medical procedures were not merely surgical interventions\u2014they nurtured hope that their children\u2019s smiles could greet the world again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Limited Access to Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions still found across various regions of Indonesia, particularly in areas with limited access to specialist services. Without treatment, these conditions can affect eating ability, speech, and psychosocial development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In East Lombok, distance, cost, and limited facilities often hinder families from accessing advanced surgical care. The presence of a cross-institutional medical team thus became more than a social service program\u2014it became a bridge between need and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"752\" height=\"1003\" data-id=\"17482\" src=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-21.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-21.jpeg 752w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-21-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-21-9x12.jpeg 9w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silent Work Behind the Operating Table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities began with medical screenings on Thursday (February 5, 2026). Each patient underwent comprehensive evaluation to ensure surgical readiness, especially infants only a few months old. The team then determined the most appropriate surgical technique based on anatomical conditions and patient history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgeries were performed throughout Friday (February 6, 2026), from morning until night. Techniques included Millard, Tennison-Randall, and Barsky labioplasty, as well as two-flap and Furlow palatoplasty.\nAll procedures followed the principle of patient-centered care, placing patient safety and needs at the core of medical decisions. Despite the long schedule, the team conducted postoperative visits to ensure safe early recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"753\" height=\"565\" data-id=\"17483\" src=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-22.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-22.jpeg 753w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-22-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/02\/image-22-16x12.jpeg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learning, Sharing, and Maintaining Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activity also served as an important clinical learning opportunity. Faculty members, residents, and alumni of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program worked side by side, discussing cases and sharing field experiences. Collaboration with the regional hospital strengthened service networks and enhanced healthcare human resource capacity. This approach reflects a long-term effort\u2014not merely resolving today\u2019s cases, but building a stronger system for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgery is not the end of the journey. On Saturday (February 7, 2026), the team conducted health education sessions for families, discussing postoperative care, the importance of continued follow-ups, and nutritional and psychosocial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For parents, this knowledge serves as preparation for their children\u2019s future. For some communities, a child\u2019s smile does not come easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Selong, East Lombok, those smiles are returning\u2014slowly, one by one.
