Technological innovations, such as tele-orthodontics, have opened new possibilities in the evaluation and treatment of patient smiles\u2014offering improved accessibility and efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tele-Orthodontics vs. In-Office Care: The Importance of Clear Instructions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A study conducted by FKG UGM student Dimar Pangestika Sari, under the supervision of Dr. drg. Cendrawasih A. F., M.Kes., Sp.Ort(K), explored the validity of tele-orthodontics in evaluating smile elements. The study compared assessments of smile components\u2014such as midline alignment, smile arc, buccal corridor, and anterior smile height\u2014before and after applying standardized orthodontic smile instructions via tele-orthodontics, and further compared the results to in-office evaluations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There were no significant differences between smile photographs taken via tele-orthodontics and in-office assessments (p &gt; 0.05).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, a significant difference was found in buccal corridor and anterior smile height before and after standardized smile instruction via tele-orthodontics (p &lt; 0.05).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These results emphasize that clear and consistent instructions are essential for obtaining valid smile photographs and accurate evaluations through tele-orthodontics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Smile Aesthetic Elements in Orthodontic Practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Smile aesthetics are evaluated based on several components, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dental midline<\/strong> \u2014 the alignment of upper and lower central incisors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smile arc<\/strong> \u2014 how the curvature of the upper teeth follows the contour of the lips.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buccal corridor<\/strong> \u2014 the visible space at the sides of the mouth when smiling; ideally balanced, not too wide or too narrow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anterior smile height<\/strong> \u2014 the proportion of the front teeth visible when smiling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These features can be assessed <strong>holistically<\/strong>, supported by tele-orthodontic technology to ensure consistent and reliable photographic data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits of Tele-Orthodontics in Modern Orthodontic Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expands access to care<\/strong>: Patients in remote areas can consult without traveling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time and cost efficiency<\/strong>: Reduces unnecessary in-office visits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accurate repeated evaluations<\/strong>: Consistent smile instructions allow for reliable photographic comparisons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhanced collaboration<\/strong>: Orthodontists can easily share and discuss tele-orthodontic images with colleagues for treatment planning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges and Recommendation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its advantages, tele-orthodontics requires attention to several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Image quality and lighting<\/strong> must be well-controlled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Standardized smile instructions<\/strong> need to be implemented to ensure uniform photo documentation across patients and locations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Continuous validation<\/strong> , as demonstrated in Dimar Pangestika Sari\u2019s study, is essential to ensure accurate evaluation results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tele-orthodontics with standardized smile instructions can produce smile aesthetic evaluations comparable to in-office assessments, particularly when proper guidance is provided.
