Bright teeth are commonly associated with health and cleanliness, leading many people to seek whitening solutions. However, conventional tooth whitening methods using synthetic chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide often cause side effects, including dentin hypersensitivity, soft tissue irritation, and enamel damage with long-term use. This has created a need for safe, effective, and sustainable tooth whitening materials, including those based on bioactive ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">Bioactive-based tooth whitening materials focus on natural ingredients that not only brighten tooth color but also support dental health and structural stability. One promising candidate is yellow kepok banana peel extract (Musa paradisiaca L. Kepok), which is rich in minerals such as phosphate and potassium, as well as antioxidant compounds. These minerals are believed to contribute to enamel remineralization and help maintain color stability after whitening application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" translation-block\">A study conducted by a Faculty of Dentistry UGM student, Septiana Prihartanti, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D. and Prof. drg. Tetiana Haniastuti, M.Kes., Ph.D., entitled \u201cPhosphate Levels in Teeth after Application of 80% Yellow Kepok Banana Peel Extract (Musa Paradisiaca L. Kepok) as a Natural Tooth Whitening Agent: An In Vitro Study,\u201d reported that application of 80% banana peel extract significantly maintained tooth phosphate levels after whitening. This indicates that natural materials not only whiten teeth but also preserve the mineral integrity of enamel. Phosphate plays an important role in color stability by supporting the stability of hydroxyapatite crystals, the main component of dental hard tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond whitening effectiveness, color stability is a key indicator of tooth whitening material quality. A good bioactive material should be able to maintain whitening results over time, prevent color relapse, and protect enamel from degradation due to chemical or mechanical activity. The use of plant extracts as bioactive agents also offers additional benefits, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which can support overall oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In clinical practice, bioactive-based tooth whitening materials such as yellow kepok banana peel extract provide a safe and natural alternative, particularly for patients sensitive to synthetic chemicals. This approach also supports sustainability principles by utilizing organic waste (banana peels) as active ingredients, aligning with the concept of green dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the growing development of natural biomaterial research, it is expected that future tooth whitening products will not only be aesthetically effective but also safe, supportive of long-term oral health, and environmentally friendly.
