Ionic activity, such as the release of calcium (Ca\u00b2\u207a) and phosphate (PO\u2084\u00b3\u207b) ions, plays a major role in repairing tooth structure and preventing caries development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laboratory Study: RMGIC vs. E-RMGIC in Acidic Conditions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A study conducted by Faculty of Dentistry UGM student Gerardus Reymon Dias, under the supervision of Prof. drg. Diatri Nari Ratih, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.KG(K) and Dr. drg. Ema Mulyawati, MS., Sp.KG(K), compared the ion release capacity of RMGIC and its enhanced version, Enhanced-RMGIC (E-RMGIC), in acidic saliva conditions. The key finding was that both RMGIC and E-RMGIC are restorative materials capable of releasing calcium and phosphate ions in acidic oral environments. These ions support remineralization and help prevent caries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, statistical analysis (Kruskal\u2013Wallis test and Post Hoc Mann\u2013Whitney U test) showed that E-RMGIC released significantly higher amounts of calcium and phosphate ions than RMGIC (p &lt; 0.05).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interpretation of Biocompatibility Relevance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remineralization and Anticaries Action<\/strong><br>Calcium and phosphate ions are primary precursors of hydroxyapatite, the natural mineral \tof bone and tooth enamel. The more effectively these ions are released, the greater the \tmaterial\u2019s potential to biologically strengthen tooth structure and combat caries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Superiority of E-RMGIC<\/strong><br>E-RMGIC demonstrated superior bioactive performance compared to RMGIC under \tacidic conditions. This suggests that modifications in the composition or formulation of \tE-RMGIC enhance its remineralization capability, particularly in acidic environments \tcommonly found around caries-prone restorations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advanced Biocompatibility Aspects<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Material chemistry: The composition of RMGIC\/E-RMGIC includes methacrylate resin, polycarboxylic acid, and HEMA, creating a bioactive local effect and a dual-cure mechanism (acid\u2013base reaction + polymerization).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Biological tissue response: Adequate ion release without toxicity or cellular disruption is essential for clinical compatibility. However, the potential effects of residual materials or monomers were not fully explored in this study, indicating the need for further in vivo and cellular toxicology studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinical Studies and Practical Implications<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Restoration durability: Resistance to acidic oral conditions (e.g., acidic foods\/drinks, bacterial biofilm) greatly affects restoration longevity. Materials that can respond adaptively to such environments\u2014such as E-RMGIC through ion release\u2014are more durable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" translation-block\">Clinical biocompatibility: The ionic effects on pulp and dentin tissues require further clinical investigation, including potential inflammatory responses, sensitivity, or regenerative stimulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laboratory research at UGM confirms that both RMGIC and E-RMGIC are capable of releasing calcium and phosphate ions under acidic saliva conditions, supporting biocompatibility and remineralization. However, E-RMGIC shows a significant advantage in ion release, making it potentially more effective in caries prevention and remineralization support.
