Proper dental care is crucial for oral cancer patients before, during, and after treatment. Given the potential side effects of cancer therapy, maintaining oral health can help prevent further complications and improve patients' quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Prof. Dr. drg. Supriatno, M.Kes., MDSc., Ph.D., in the book <em>Oral Cancer<\/em> published by UGM Press, oral cancer not only affects the physical function of the mouth but also has profound psychological effects on patients. Therefore, a comprehensive approach that includes dental care is essential in the treatment journey of oral cancer patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main concerns in dental care for oral cancer patients is the high risk of infection. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can weaken the immune system, making patients more susceptible to gum and oral infections. Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial, which includes regular brushing and using antibacterial mouthwash as recommended by a dentist. Additionally, patients should avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking or consuming alcohol, which can further deteriorate oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Side effects of cancer treatment, such as dry mouth (xerostomia), also present significant challenges. This condition increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Patients are advised to increase fluid intake, use oral moisturizers, and avoid foods that irritate the oral tissues. Consulting a dentist for recommendations on suitable oral care products can help maintain oral moisture and overall dental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer treatment can also cause changes in oral tissues, including persistent sores or slow-healing wounds. Therefore, regular monitoring by a dentist is crucial to detect any suspicious changes early. Patients should consult a dentist before starting cancer treatment to receive an evaluation and appropriate care to prevent future oral health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional support and education for patients regarding the importance of dental care in the context of oral cancer treatment are equally important. Many patients may feel anxious about dental care or the symptoms they experience. By providing clear and accessible information, patients can better understand the importance of maintaining oral health and recognize issues that should be reported to their dentist. As stated by drg. Goeno Subagyo, Sp.O.Path., in his research on health education regarding oral cancer risk factors and symptoms, health education plays a vital role in raising public awareness. Such education helps patients and the community understand the importance of early detection and proper treatment to reduce oral cancer complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special attention to dental care for oral cancer patients is necessary to prevent more serious health complications. Through proper dental care, patients not only maintain their oral health but also contribute to overall health management during cancer treatment.
