Bangkok, 8-20 September 2024 \u2013 The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the skills and knowledge of its educators by participating in the \"Continuing Education in Gerodontology and Special Care Dentistry\" <\/em>course held for 10 days at the Faculty of Dentistry<\/em>, Thammasat University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two representatives from FKG UGM attended the program: drg. Hendri Susanto, M.Kes, Ph.D, Sp.PM, Head of the Oral Disease Specialist Program, and drg. Shoimah Alfa Makmur, M.D.Sc., Sp.KGA(K), from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held on the 8th floor of the Ratchasuda Building, the course aimed to deepen participants' knowledge and clinical skills related to dental care for patients with special needs and elderly patients (geriatric). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants attended various lectures, clinical observations, and hands-on practice at the Gerodontology and Special Care Dentistry Postgraduate Clinic<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course covered topics such as drug-induced gingival enlargement<\/em>, implantitis, oral lesions in the elderly, orofacial pain, and care approaches for patients with dementia and children on the autism spectrum or with attention disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to lectures, course participants visited several healthcare facilities, including the Oral Health for All Clinics, Kukot Primary Care Unit, TU Hospice Center,<\/em> and Thammasat University Hospital<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These visits provided valuable insights into the management of geriatric and special needs patients, including inpatient care, special care for children under general anesthesia, hands-on<\/em> practice in minimally invasive restorations, and digital workflows in making removable dentures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course also opened opportunities for research collaboration between FKG UGM, Gerodontology and Special Care Dentistry Postgraduate Clinic<\/em>, and support from the IPM Department of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Indonesia (UI), reinforcing international partnerships to foster innovation in the field of dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond improving the competence of educators, this activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participation in this course represents an important step for FKG UGM in improving the quality of education, especially in gerontology and special care dentistry, and in preparing healthcare professionals to meet the challenges of providing inclusive and high-quality services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
