However, exposure to acidic substances from everyday foods and drinks, such as fruit juices, sodas, or acidic foods, can gradually cause enamel erosion. When enamel wears away, teeth become more susceptible to damage, sensitivity, and discoloration. Therefore, understanding how to prevent acid erosion is essential for maintaining long-term dental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in preventing acid erosion is to reduce the consumption of acidic foods and drinks. This does not mean they must be completely avoided, but it is advisable to balance them with water or consume them during meals. Drinking water after consuming acidic foods or drinks helps neutralize the acid in the mouth, thereby reducing its direct impact on the enamel. Additionally, using a straw when drinking acidic beverages can minimize direct contact between the acid and the teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brushing teeth with proper technique and using fluoride toothpaste is another important step. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel, making it more resistant to acid. However, it is recommended to brush teeth at least 30 minutes after consuming acidic foods or drinks. Brushing too soon after eating or drinking acidic substances can worsen erosion since the enamel, still softened, is more prone to abrasion from the toothbrush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, maintaining saliva flow is essential because saliva acts as a natural protector, neutralizing acids and rinsing food residues. Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production and help maintain oral moisture. By maintaining the acid balance and moisture in the mouth, the risk of enamel erosion can be minimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes, Ph.D., in her inauguration speech as a professor at FKG UGM, explained the role of saliva in maintaining the pH balance in the mouth. When we consume acidic food or drinks, saliva works to neutralize the acidity, protecting teeth from acid erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventing acid erosion on tooth enamel requires awareness of maintaining proper eating habits and dental care. By protecting tooth enamel, we not only prevent more serious dental damage but also maintain overall oral health and quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoiding enamel erosion directly supports oral health, which is part of overall body health. These preventive steps help maintain tooth strength and prevent further damage, supporting SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education on oral health care, including acid erosion prevention, should be provided from an early age, both in schools and within the family environment. This knowledge helps children understand the importance of dental care, supporting SDG 4: Quality Education, which includes personal health aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preventing acid erosion on teeth also relates to the choice of food and drink consumption. Reducing the intake of sweet and acidic beverages and choosing healthier products supports the goal of promoting more responsible lifestyles and consumption patterns.
