Students from the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) recently undertook a biomaterials practical exam at the conclusion of their learning module. The exam, held on 2 September 2024, utilized the tentamen format for the dental restoration topic. This format not only tested the students' understanding of the material but also emphasized the importance of their mental readiness under strict time constraints and tight supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The students were challenged with 45 questions arranged in a circuit format, requiring them to move from one station to the next every 30 seconds. The questions extended beyond typical written or multiple-choice formats. Students encountered tools and materials used in dental restoration practice and were tasked with identifying these items, understanding their functions, and answering relevant questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lecturers viewed this evaluation method as highly beneficial. \u201cTentamen-based evaluation presents unique challenges for students. It not only requires theoretical understanding but also prepares them to respond quickly and efficiently to clinical scenarios in the field,\u201d explained Drg. Dyah Anindya Widyasrini, MDSc, Coordinator of the Biomaterials Practicum. She added that this format will continue to evolve to ensure students are prepared for real-world situations in their future careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This tentamen format is not limited to the Dental Restoration topic but is also applied in other biomaterials practical modules, such as Removable Partial Dentures, Dental Technology and Materials, and Biomaterials for Prosthodontics courses. This type of evaluation is expected to enhance students' cognitive and psychomotor skills, equipping them to face future challenges and become competent and professional dentists. Moreover, this initiative contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
