According to the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), 54% of children aged 5 to 9 suffer from cavities. This alarming statistic is primarily due to the low awareness of oral and dental hygiene in the community. Addressing this issue requires collaboration among schools, healthcare professionals, parents, and communities to raise awareness and foster good oral health habits from an early age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), organized a School Health Program (SHP) at Budi Utama Elementary School on 15 October 2024, aiming to enhance awareness of the importance of dental and oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>drg. Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, MDSc., Sp.BMM (K), explained the purpose of the FKG UGM team\u2019s visit: conducting health education and dental check-ups. \u201c<em>This School Health Program roadshow<\/em> is part of the 2024 National Dental Health Month series. Students from Budi Utama Elementary School will have the opportunity for further dental treatment if any dental issues are identified today,\u201d said Dr. Yosaphat, who is fondly called Yosi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M. M. Mayawanti Gampamole, S.Pd., the coordinator of Budi Utama Elementary School, expressed her appreciation for this initiative, noting the honor of collaborating with FKG UGM. \u201cWe have 531 students who will undergo check-ups. We hope that in the future, not only the students but also their parents can receive health education, as parental involvement is critical in maintaining their children\u2019s dental and oral health,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program began with education sessions led by School Health Program-trained teachers, who had attended <a href=\"https:\/\/fkg.ugm.ac.id\/id\/school-health-program-libatkan-guru-untuk-tingkatkan-kesehatan-gigi-di-sekolah-dasar\/\">training at FKG UGM the previous week<\/a>. Afterward, the students underwent dental and oral health examinations conducted by dental students pursuing their professional training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anisa, one of the participating students, shared her excitement about being part of this community service initiative. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to meet the students here. This experience not only hones my clinical skills but also enhances my ability to communicate with pediatric patients,\u201d she remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 National Dental Health Month carries the theme \u201cDare to Show Your Teeth, Support a Stronger Smile for Indonesia\u201d and involves 19 dental faculties and dental hospitals across Indonesia.
