The Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), organized an important training focused on creating obturators, medical devices designed to assist children with cleft palate, on 14 September 2024. The event was held to address the challenges posed by cleft palate, a congenital condition in which the roof of the mouth does not fully form during fetal development, potentially leading to various serious health issues for children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children with cleft palate often experience difficulties with eating, speaking, and even hearing, as the gap in the roof of the mouth affects basic functions such as sucking and speaking. Other problems that arise include recurrent ear infections and irregular tooth development, all of which require intensive medical care. The training aimed to enhance the skills of dental professionals in providing affordable and effective solutions, thereby improving the quality of life for children suffering from this condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the training held in the IKGA discussion room at FKG UGM, resident participants from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program learned the latest techniques in obturator creation. The practical approach provided by experienced instructors allowed the residents to directly practice their skills. In addition to the creation techniques, the training emphasized the importance of empathy and effective communication with children with disabilities, as well as involving parents in the care process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"We hope that through this activity, we can develop good skills, so that as pediatric dentists, we can provide comprehensive care and support for a better quality of life for these children,\" said Drg. Arif Rahman, one of the residents who participated in the training. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This program not only focuses on technical skills but also supports global efforts to improve access to affordable healthcare solutions, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG Goal 4 (Quality Education). It is hoped that this program will continue and become a long-term solution to the dental and oral health challenges faced by children with special needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
