Jaw issues often involve both functional and aesthetic disturbances, as misalignment of the jaws can result in a less proportional appearance of the face. These issues can be addressed through orthognathic surgery. The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) held a Live Surgery Workshop and Hands-On Orthognathic Surgery<\/em> event on 18 February 2024. This event was attended by residents and specialists in orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most exciting moments of the event was the live surgery conducted by Rear Admiral (Ret.) Prof. Dr. drg. Setyo Harnowo, Sp.B.M.M., Subsp.Ortognat-D(K), FICD, FICCDE. With extensive experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Prof. Setyo led the surgical team performing the orthognathic procedure, providing a rare opportunity for participants to observe techniques and strategies directly from an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. drg. Cendrawasih Andusyana Farmasyanti, M.Kes., Sp.Ort.(K), Head of the Orthodontics Department, stated that participants were able to observe the surgical process from start to finish. The surgery began with pre-operative preparation, incision techniques, plate and screw placement, and concluded with wound closure. \u201cThis event serves as an effective educational medium, where participants gain not only theoretical knowledge but also see real applications in the operating room,\u201d said drg. Cendrawasih.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to witnessing the surgery live, participants were also given the opportunity for hands-on<\/em> practice under the guidance of the surgical team. They could practice basic and advanced techniques in orthognathic surgery. This experience was invaluable for professionals and residents specializing in orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthognathic surgery is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the misalignment between the upper and lower jaws. Such misalignment can lead to issues with biting, speaking, and even affect an individual\u2019s facial appearance. The Live Surgery Workshop and Hands-On<\/em> event are expected to enhance practical skills and strengthen collaboration between orthodontic specialists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons to provide the best services for patients requiring orthognathic treatment.
This event shows that FKG UGM's commit to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially goal 3 Good Health and Well-being, goal 4 on quality education and goal 17 on Partnerships to achieve the Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
