ABSTRACT

Background : Yogyakarta is a province in Indonesia with the highest number of elderly up to 13.20%. So far the quality of life assessment is mostly based on general health of people. Deterioration of physiologic condition, polypharmacy and the high occurrence of chronic disease in elderly manifest in oral cavity that can affect oral function, in turn, it will affect people how they enjoy life (quality of life). Aim : To describe the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older people in Yogyakarta. Materials and methods : Geriatric/General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) questionnaire in English was translated into Indonesian. Validity and reliability tests were conducted in 50 elders. The reliable and validated questionnaire then was applied in 136 elders in Yogyakarta. OHRQoL was classified based on total score of GOHAI (≤50 : low, 51-56 : moderate, 57-60 : high). Results : The validity and reliability of GOHAI questionnaire in Indonesian was 100% with Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient was 0.783. The subjects consisted of 24 males and 112 females. The mean total GOHAI score was 45.6. Percentage of subject with high, moderate and low OHRQOL were 12.5%, 17.65% and 69.85%, respectively. Percentage of male subject with high, moderate and low OHRQOL were 4.17%, 29.17% and 66.66%, respectively. Percentage of female subject with high, moderate and low OHRQOL were 14.29%, 15.18% and 70.53%, respectively. Conclusion : Majority of elders in Yogyakarta have low OHRQoL with percentage of female with low OHRQoL is higher than male.
