 Abstract

In dentistry, clinician struggles against anaerobic bacterial infection as well as progressive alveolar destruction such in periodontitis and alveolar osteitis cases. Topical application of drugs becomes intricate because of periodontal tissue anatomy. This research was aimed to prepare dual function strip as a scaffold and delivery system. Carbonated apatite and gelatin hydrogel strip was prepared using dehydrothermal treatment in different compositions. The strips were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Mechanical strength of the strips was also analyzed using tensile tests. Metronidazole loading percentage was calculated to determine the strips capacity to deliver metronidazole in a controlled release manner. Statistically significant loading percentage of metronidazole was found between different composition groups (p<0.05). Strips containing composition 5:5 (gelatin:carbonated apatite) showed highest loading percentage of metronidazole. Keywords: gelatin hydrogel, carbonated apatite, metronidazole
